Student Poster Award at the 136th Japanese Forest Society for his research

Mr. Jeyavanan Karthigesu, a Ph.D. student at the University of Tokyo, won the Student Poster Award at the 136th Japanese Forest Society Conference for his research on Individual Tree Detection in a Complex Mixed Conifer-Broadleaf Forest Using UAV RGB and Multispectral Imagery. He is pursuing his Ph.D. in the Department of Global Agricultural Sciences, Graduate School of Agricultural and Life Sciences, The University of Tokyo, and conducts his research at the University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest. His research is supervised by Prof. Toshiaki Owari at The University of Tokyo Hokkaido Forest, with co-supervision from Prof. Satoshi Tsuyuki and Prof. Takuya Hiroshima at the laboratory of Global Forest Environmental Studies in The University of Tokyo. The Faculty of Agriculture organized 2nd late Prof. Somasundaram Kandiah memorial lecture-2023 to commemorate and appreciate its 1st dean’s services on 22nd of Sep 2023 at the main auditorium faculty of Agriculture, Ariviyal Nagar, Kilinochchi from 10.30 am-11.35 am with the financial support of late Prof. Somasundaram Kandiah memorial lecture. This year, with the JICA-PRECIDA’s support Japanese eminent scientist Dr. Koki TOYOTA from Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology delivered the memorial lecture under the title of "Approach to sustainable soil use to feed a growing world population". Around 200 participants (Son and grandson of late professor S.Kandiah, JICA delegates, academia, alumina members, students and staff of faculty of Agriculture) attended the memorial lecture. Hector Kobbekadduwa Agrarian Research and Training Institute (HARTI) in collaboration with the Provincial Department of Agriculture (Northern Province), Extension and Training Centre, Department of Agriculture, Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the Faculty of Agriculture, University of Jaffna organized the training program for the extension officers in the Northern Province.
